Xochimilco
is one of the last reserves of water in Mexico City.
40% of water consumed by the capital comes from Xochimilco.
According to ecological and biological scientists, if
the environment of Lake Xochimilco collapses, Mexico
City may suffer negative consequences.
Xochimilco
is special because there are still chinampas or floating
gardens: it is a world heritage site due to its agriculture:
an agricultural tradition unique in the world.
The agriculture of the chinampas is more than a thousand
years old. Our organisation, the farmers and traditional
craftspeople, keep this tradition alive, working with
farming methods that respect the environment, its biodiversity
and that are in tune with Mother Nature.
Dr.
Luis Zambrano, Department of Ecological Restoration,
Institute of Biology, UNAM, believes that our project
is one of the few that can prevent the deterioration
of Xochimilco in the very near future.
You can support our work in different ways: through
responsible consumption, purchasing our products, and
ecofriendly tourism.
